Equinox is a premier string quartet in Buffalo, New York known for delivering sophisticated, dynamic, and memorable music. Based in the heart of Buffalo, Equinox blends classical training with modern versatility, offering a wide repertoire that spans classical masterworks, folk music, contemporary arrangements, and custom requests. 

The word equinox derives from the Latin word aequinoctium - combining aequus (equal) and nox (night). Founded by four friends in winter 2023, Equinox String Quartet aims to bring a similar division to their music - classical works brought to life with modern style.

The quartet officially came together during a moment of transition in each musician’s career, aligning with the meaning of their name: Equinox String Quartet. Just as the equinox represents a perfect balance between day and night, we seek to  perform with perspective that balances classical techniques and contemporary expression. The idea of musical equilibrium - when precision meets creativity, and timeless repertoire meets fresh interpretation - has become the central vision of Equinox String Quartet's identity.

Our Story

Equinox String Quartet has been performing throughout Western New York for over 2 years – but our story starts much earlier. In 2010, Lizzie and David met in middle school, and have played together for over 15 years.

Before their formation, these four musicians spent time in different cities, pursuing their own personal and professional goals. Sam and Jess each earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Performance; Lizzie and David earned Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering. By early 2023, Sam, Lizzie, David, and Jess found themselves back in Buffalo, all seeking to connect with the vibrant classical music scene. They each joined various community orchestras and chamber ensembles, where one lucky day, Lizzie, Sam, and Jess crossed paths at a concert and decided to schedule a time to play together - outside of orchestra. 

Their first rehearsal was scheduled for December 8th, 2023 -  after that, the rest is history.
